Lyonel Feininger – Letters to Julia
(1905 – 1935)
A staged lecture by Ines Burdow and Stephan Baumecker, accompanied by live sounds by Frank Diersch
The correspondence between Lyonel Feininger and his wife Julia tells a fateful love story and stands as a testament to the work and life of one of the most important artists of Classical Modernism.
To mark the 150th anniversary of his birth on July 17, 2021, Inés Burdow compiled an extensive selection of Feininger’s letters, many of them published for the first time. The collection documents all stages of his Bauhaus years as well as his stays in Paris and New York, alongside encounters with Walter Gropius, Alma Mahler-Werfel, and Alfred Kubin.
Inés Burdow is an actress, director, and author. She has appeared at renowned theatres including the Berliner Ensemble and the Volksbühne Berlin, and is a member of the artistic leadership team of the Andere Welt Bühne in Strausberg, where she also regularly performs and directs productions. Her engagement with Feininger’s letters began as part of the “100 Years of Bauhaus” project, commissioned by the Feininger Museum in Quedlinburg.
Stephan Baumecker is an actor and voice artist. He has been a member of the ensemble at several major theatres, including the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Schillertheater Berlin, and the Berliner Ensemble. In addition, he has appeared in numerous film and television productions such as Herr Lehmann, Tatort, and SOKO Leipzig.
The illustrator and sound artist Frank Diersch works with the mediums of live radio drama and sound collage. He regularly produces the format drawing radio for Radio Industry.
